Restoration of the front façade of the Palais de Justice in Brussels begins this Monday, according to a press release from the Secretary of State for the Régie des Bâtiments, Mathieu Michel.
The restoration work will take around two years to complete and will cost €31.7 million.
The project to restore the front façade (on the Place Poelaert side) of the Palais de Justice in Brussels began in March 2021, when the scaffolding that had been securing the façade since the 2000s was reinforced and adapted to current standards.
The adaptation of this scaffolding made it possible to carry out the restoration study of the front façade by PERSPECTIV architecten. This was completed in spring 2023, following which a contractor (T.M. Artes Woudenberg nv – Artes Roegiers nv) was appointed to carry out the work.
The work involves the restoration of the façade itself, but also the peristyle and external joinery. The courtyard of honour will also be redeveloped and a gate, in line with the historic model, will be installed. Finally, a lighting plan will be drawn up for the Palais de Justice.
The scaffolding on the front façade is due to be removed in summer 2024.

"Starting the work that should have been done 40 years ago is the only way to remove the scaffolding. This achievement is the result of daily monitoring, in-depth work and finding solutions with the Régie des Bâtiments," says the Secretary of State.
In the next phase, the base of the dome of the Palais will be restored, the dome having already been restored in 2003. The work is scheduled to take place between 2026 and 2027.
