A Brussels Airlines plane was struck by lightning on Friday morning while flying from Brussels to Tel Aviv, a spokeswoman for the airline confirmed.
The aircraft, which had to turn around and land in Brussels, was slightly damaged but there were no injuries.
The lightning was caused by the violent thunderstorm that swept across the country on Friday morning. After the impact, the standard safety procedure was observed: the aircraft returned to Zaventem airport at around 11:00 to undergo a technical inspection. Except for slight damage to the nose of the plane, everything was in order.
"The safety of our passengers and crew was never compromised," spokeswoman Joëlle Neeb said. "In the meantime, some passengers have already left on another flight to Tel Aviv; others will leave later this evening, Saturday or Sunday."
The aircraft in question has undergone a thorough inspection and has been cleared to fly. It was due to leave for London on Friday evening.
According to the airline, it is "exceptional" for a plane to be struck by lightning.
