Belgian athletes earned $48,000 in bonuses in Budapest during the 19th edition of the World Championships, which took place from 19 to 27 August 2023 in Budapest, thanks to five top-8 finishes.
For the first time since 2013, Team Belgium athletics returned from the 19th edition of the World Championships held from 19 to 27 August in Budapest without a podium finish.
The international athletics federation, World Athletics, awards bonuses to all athletes who finish in the top eight in their events at the World Championships.
The 30-year-old from Brussels, Cynthia Bolingo, finished 5th in the 400m final, edging out Lieke Klaver of the Netherlands by 1 thousandth of a second. This small gap earned her the sum of $11,000 – $4,000 more than the sum allocated to an individual in 6th place.
Noor Vidts, who finished 6th in the heptathlon, received $7,000.
Thanks to a 7th-place finish in the pole vault, Ben Broeders walks away with $6,000.
The women’s 4x400m relay, the Belgian Cheetahs, made up of Helena Ponette, Imke Vervaet, Hanne Claes, Camille Laus finished 5th in the final and will receive $12,000.
The mixed relay of Robin Vanderbemden, Imke Vervaet, Jonathan Borlée and Camille Laus, also came in 5th place in the final and will share $12,000.
