A Belgian woman was stung 20 times in the head by hornets while hiking over the weekend, VRT reports.
The incident took place while two hiking groups based in East Flanders were out walking near Lier (Antwerp province).
"There were 49 of us present," said Erik Lieven, the President of Land van Rhode, one of the two hiking clubs. "12 people were attacked and stung several times. Two members had to be taken to hospital."
He added: "A woman from our club was also on a drip for a while, after she was stung 20 times in the head. She has since returned home and needs to rest. Many ambulances came and went after the attack and it was quite an experience for all of us. We hope never to have to go through this again."
VRT also reported that a 60-year-old man had to be resuscitated after the attack. He is currently in intensive care at a local hospital; his condition has been described as "stable".
