Europol reports 28 terrorist attacks in the EU in 2022

28 terrorist attacks were carried out, failed or foiled in the European Union in 2022, according to a Europol report published at the end of August.

Of these attacks, 16 were successful, with 12 foiled. Out of the attack that were carried out: 13 were of an anarchist ideology, two jihadi and one from the far-right.

These attacks resulted in four deaths in the EU, including one in Belgium.

There were two terrorist attacks in Belgium last year: one by an anarchist assailant, and the other by a jihadi. A third attempt was foiled in Ostend.

Across the EU as a whole, 380 people were arrested for terrorism-related offences, most of them jihadist. There were 23 in Belgium: 22 linked to jihadism, and one to anarchist ideology.

In total, 427 judgments were handed down in terrorism-related cases in the bloc last year. In Belgium, 81 judgements were handed down leading to 67 convictions and 14 acquittals.
