The public prosecutor in the Charleroi Correctional Court on Monday requested a five-year prison sentence for an 18-year-old man who raped a sex worker at knifepoint.
On 6 May last year, the defendant admitted to sexually assaulting a prostitute in a brothel after leading her to believe that he had money to pay for the service. “In the end, he had no money and pulled out a knife to threaten the victim and get what he wanted,” said the public prosecutor.
The man, who is currently being held under electronic surveillance, was arrested the day after the events after returning to the scene still armed with the knife.
The 18-year-old said at the hearing “that he was sorry, but that he needed to have sex.”
The Office of the Public Prosecutor requested a sentence of five years in prison, without opposing a partial probationary suspension for half the prison term.
“He’s very young, just coming of age, and he’s going to rape. He’s a danger to society and I wonder what will happen when he wants to have sex again,” the Deputy Public Prosecutor said.
The defence pleaded for a suspended sentence.
Judgement is to be handed down on 18 September.
