With temperatures rising to 30.1 °C degrees on Wednesday, Belgium recorded the country’s highest temperatures on 6 September since records began, meteorologist David Dehenauw announced on X (formerly Twitter). A heat wave could be declared this week.

The last time temperatures for 6 September were even comparable was in 1899 when temperatures reached 28.6 °C in Belgium.

Meteorologists will officially announce a heatwave when temperatures remain above 25 °C for five consecutive days, including three days with temperatures over 30 °C. With temperatures exceeding 30 °C for the last two days, a heatwave is still possible. The Royal Meteorological Institute (IRM) predicts warm temperatures for the next few days.

A code yellow warning for high temperatures is currently in place for most parts of the country, with the exception of the coast and the province of Luxembourg. This warning will last until Monday. Afterwards, lower temperatures and stormy showers are expected.
