A young man from Flanders crawled for 48 hours along the side of a motorway in France after coming off his motorcycle on Friday, Het Laatste Nieuws reports.

While riding his motorcycle along the A75 motorway between Clermont-Ferrand and Montpellier in France, the young Flemish man in his twenties crashed, being flung over the safety barriers along the side of the road.

Injured, his body was hidden from other motorists by thick vegetation. No one saw the incident and nobody came to his aid.

The biker reportedly spent 48 hours crawling inch by inch along the hard shoulder, all without water, food, or medical assistance. The motorcyclist suffered multiple broken bones. Only on Sunday afternoon was he able to emerge from the undergrowth and pull himself back onto the hard shoulder.

The motorcyclist may still not have been spotted if it weren’t for the efforts of 18-year-old Diego Rodriguez, a motorist who spotted “something moving” on the side of the road. Speaking to HLN, he said that he passed by at 120 kilometres per hour and first believed that the young Flemish man’s body was just a “garbage bag”.

Parking further down the motorway, Rodriguez made his way back towards the crashed motorcyclists. “He asked me if I had anything to eat or drink. He wanted to take off his helmet, but I refused. I preferred to wait for help to arrive,” Rodriguez told HLN.

The Belgian motorcyclist was transported to a hospital in Montpellier by helicopter. His situation is not believed to be critical.
