Belgium's Federal Government will send €5 million in humanitarian aid to Morocco following the devastating earthquake on Friday night.
In a statement posted to X (formerly Twitter), Federal Minister for Development Cooperation Caroline Gennez said that the funds will "help the victims of the earthquake in Morocco and support reconstruction".
She added that Belgium is also prepared to send a medical unit from the Belgian First Aid and Support Team (B-FAST) if this is requested by Morocco.
I am releasing €5 million to help victims of the earthquake in Morocco and support reconstruction.
We are looking at deploying a B-FAST medical team. We are waiting for a concrete request from Morocco for this.#Maroc #Morroco #Marrakech #earthquake — Caroline Gennez (@carogennez) September 9, 2023
Gennez's announcement comes on the same day that the Walloon and Flemish Governments declared that they will send €500,000 and €200,000 respectively. The Brussels Government will dispatch €180,000.
At least 820 people died and 672 were injured, 205 of them seriously, in the earthquake on Friday evening. The earthquake also caused enormous physical damage to buildings in Marrakech and much of the surrounding area.
