The Federal Minister for Mobility, Georges Gilkinet, has confirmed the establishment of a national bicycle identification register from January.

As part of the “Be Cyclist” programme, this initiative seeks to bolster bicycle usage across the country.

Starting in January, the Brussels-based Mybike system, which combats bicycle theft via a registry, will extend its services nationally. Bicycle owners can volunteer to register, receiving an identifying sticker for their bike in return.

Brussels’ success inspires national expansion

The Gracq (Group of Research and Action for Daily Cyclists) welcomes this nationwide registry. They contend that such a system will deter the resale of stolen bicycles. With the Brussels Mybike system already registering over 43,000 bicycles, Minister Gilkinet anticipates a surge in registrations due to this expansion.

Although there will be a single national database, each region will oversee its dedicated website and manage its communication regarding the initiative.
