The traffic lights at the intersection of Rue Belliard and the Small Ring road will be adjusted from Tuesday, giving cyclists the green light for longer, director of maintenance service at Brussels Mobility Dimitri Strobbe announced.
Brussels Mobility is gradually rolling out smart traffic lights which can adapt better to traffic across the Capital Region. The traffic lights on the Van Praet Bridge are now also equipped with the new system.
"Good news! The programming of the Belliard/Small Ring Road crossroads will be modified from [Tuesday] morning, with more green for cyclists," Strobbe announced on social media.
He specified that cyclists and pedestrians will have between one and nine seconds longer with the green light to cross the intersection. Exact times will depend on the distance to cross and traffic volume.
In practice, this means that the duration of the green and red light cycle depends on how much traffic there is; when it is busy, the cycle is shortened or extended for better flow. "We monitor everything from the mobility centre using cameras. Traffic loops also count the number of cyclists and cars to estimate the crowds," Brussels Mobility said.
