The Tongres investigating judge has ordered the arrest of a 21-year-old man from Maaseik under suspicion of the violent death of his stepbrother.
The victim suffered life-threatening injuries after he was reportedly stabbed on Friday morning. He was still taken to hospital, but succumbed to his sustained injuries.
The local Maasland police were able to handcuff the 21-year-old suspect, after which he was transferred to the police station for questioning. “Autopsy revealed that the victim died by sharp force. The suspect is charged with murder. The motive and what exactly happened is also still unclear,” said press officer Pieter Strauven of the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Limburg on Saturday.
The Limburg Prosecutor’s Office immediately launched the suspicious death protocol on Friday, with the forensic lab and doctor coming to the scene. The victim turned out not to be the owner or permanent resident of the house. On Friday, a digital recreation of events was created with the competent magistrate of the Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Tongeren examining magistrate.
In such a recreation, the Federal Judicial Police of Limburg creates a visualisation of the crime scene by means of 360-degree photos and video images, which can be followed live from a distance by the investigators, the Public Prosecutor’s Office and the examining magistrate.
The expert, who provides the images, also makes a 3D scan of the crime scene at the same time. The major advantage of this method is the rapid visualisation, the minimal contamination of traces at the crime scene and the available images, which can be revisited later.
