United States lends Poland €2 billion to boost its defence

The United States has granted Poland a $2-billion loan to modernise its army under its Foreign Military Financing programme, which helps countries secure their defence capabilities.

According to the State Department, such loans are reserved for some of the United States key security cooperation partners. Poland is a staunch ally of the United States and its security is crucial to the joint defence of NATO’s eastern flank, the Department said.

Faced with Russia’s invasion of neighbouring Ukraine, the EU and NATO member State is keen to invest heavily in its military.

It plans to spend 4% of its gross domestic product (GDP) on defence this year, twice as much as NATO requires of its members.
