Sheep have started behaving bizarrely after breaking into a medical cannabis greenhouse in Thessaly (central Greece) and devouring around 300 kilograms of the crop in total, La Voix du Nord reports.

The unusual incident comes following catastrophic floods in Greece from Storm Daniel, during which the plantation lost 80% of its production.

"We are the biggest cannabis greenhouse in Central and Eastern Europe. While we were trying to save everything we could, we came across sheep and goats grazing inside the greenhouse", one of the workers, Yiannis Bourounis, told a Greek radio station.

'They're crazy!'

"I don't know whether to laugh or cry," the plantation owner told TheNewspaper.gr. "We had the heatwave and lost a lot of production, we had the floods and lost almost everything, and now this. The herd entered the greenhouse and ate what was left. I don't know what to say, honestly."

Initially, officials thought that the herd had grazed on around 100 kg of medical cannabis, but the figure was later estimated to stand at around 300 kg. The most difficult part, said the owner, was chasing the sheep away from the greenhouse. "They were jumping higher than the goats, which never happens...they're crazy!" he laughed.

Medical marijuana was legalised in Greece in 2018, but is still illegal for recreational purposes. Germany became the latest European country to decriminalise the recreational use of cannabis last month, when the Cabinet approved a draft bill to remove cannabis from the list of prohibited substances in the narcotics law.
