Flanders is making it easier to compare energy contracts by including a price alarm in its so-called 'V-test': if a more advantageous contract comes onto the market, the consumer will automatically receive a notification.

With the Flemish Energy Regulator (VREG)'s V-test, people can compare energy contracts to see which is the most advantageous for them. People have also been able to include their own contract in this comparison since the start of 2023.

This function is now being expanded even further, Moniek Schelstraete of VREG told VRT. "We are going a step further, as the V-test will send an email when you can save money on your energy contract."

Consumers can indicate from which amount they want to be notified in advance, she explained. "You determine in advance what the savings amount is for which you want to set a price alarm. When contracts come onto the market where you can actually save that amount, you will automatically receive an email from the V-test."

The price alarm is just information. Consumers are still free to decide whether they actually want to switch to a cheaper contract. The new application will be launched on 17 October and is only available to people who live in Flanders.
