Polling stations opened in Poland on Sunday morning for a close legislative election. It is already seen as one of the most crucial for the future of the country's ties with the EU and neighbouring Ukraine.

According to the polls, the ruling populist Law and Justice party (PiS) will win the most votes. But it may struggle to form a coalition government, paving the way for the opposition led by the former head of the European Council, Donald Tusk.

Polls in the EU and NATO Member State close at 19:00 GMT (21:00 Belgian time). Exit polls are expected immediately afterwards, and the final results on Monday.

Poland has 29 million voters, including more than half a million registered abroad.

A PiS victory could exacerbate tensions with Brussels and Kyiv and disappoint those concerned about the future of the rule of law, press freedom, women's rights and migrants.
