A driver suspected of killing an e-scooter rider and seriously a passenger was brought in for questioning on Tuesday following a hit-and-run in the early hours of Sunday morning in Bordeaux.

The public prosecution service opened a criminal investigation against X, the accused, for manslaughter aggravated by the hit-and-run nature of the accident, unintentional injuries aggravated by the hit-and-run nature of the collision, no insurance and failing to assist a person in danger.

On Sunday about 3:30 AM, an e-scooter travelling along the quays of the Garonne river in central Bordeaux, was hit by a car that fled the scene. The scooter driver, aged 25, died on the spot, while his female passenger (18) was taken to hospital in a serious condition.

A day later, the inquiry managed to establish the identity of the car driver, a 27-year-old from Bordeaux who was taken into custody. He, however, denies being at the wheel of the car when the offence was committed, the prosecutor's office stated.

Appearing before an examining magistrate on Tuesday, he was placed under investigation for failure to assist a person in danger and failure to have insurance. Several fatal accidents involving e-scooters have occurred over the last few months, notably in Paris, Rheims, the Yvelines department and in the Pas-de-Calais.
