Belgium has voted in favour of a humanitarian truce at the United Nations General Assembly, announced the spokesperson for the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday.

“Belgium supports this initiative, which aims to protect civilians, free hostages, encourage respect for international law by all parties, establish a humanitarian truce and avoid escalating violence in the region,” remarked the Minister, Hadja Lahbib.

The humanitarian truce was approved by a large majority at the Assembly. Belgium is advocating for all humanitarian obstacles in the Gaza Strip to be lifted, and is pushing for “the establishment of relief pauses and humanitarian corridors.”

Furthermore, the country calls for the observance of international and humanitarian laws while reiterating its condemnation of the terrorist attacks carried out by Hamas in Israel on October 7th.

The Belgian Ministry also added that it implores the release of all hostages held by Hamas and unequivocally recognises Israel’s right to self-defence.

The non-binding resolution was not supported by Israel and the United States, who criticised the omission of any mention of Hamas.
