The Belgian's women national football team, known as the Red Flames, are hosting the World Cup silver medallists England in a sold-out event in Leuven on Tuesday, as part of the UEFA Women's Nations League.
“Playing in front of a full house is a well-deserved gift for my players,” said Red Flames manager Ives Serneels during a press conference. "They have worked so hard for this."
The Belgian national women’s football team failed to cause an upset against England on Friday. The Lionesses triumphed 1-0 at a packed Leicester City Stadium, with Lauren Hemp scoring the sole goal.
After a late Friday night return to Belgium and a spell in Leicester City Stadium's changing room without hot water, Saturday was dedicated entirely to recovery, stated Serneels. “The players enjoyed a leisurely afternoon with their families. Everyone was back on the training field on Sunday.”
Despite their defeat on Friday in Leicester, the Flames delivered a commendable performance. “I saw good things that we want to continue to improve. What is a good outcome against England? Winning. While anything is possible in football, we must remember, it’s still England.”
In the group, Belgium has slipped from the top spot to third with 4 out of 9 points. Both Netherlands, who triumphed 4-0 over Scotland on Friday, and England hold the lead with 6 points. Scotland trails with one point. The group winner will progress to the Final Four.
After the England match, the Red Flames have to play against Scotland (1/12) at home and the Netherlands (5/12) away.
