Disney announced on Wednesday its intention to acquire a third of NBC Universal’s shares in streaming platform Hulu for $8.6 billion.
The American entertainment giant is already the majority stakeholder in Hulu. Following the completion of this deal, it will become the sole owner of the platform.
Hulu is included in Disney’s subscription offerings, alongside its own Disney+ service and sports streaming platform ESPN+. The company stated in a press release that this transaction will further its streaming objectives.
The deal values Hulu at $27.5 billion.
This agreement follows Disney’s prior acquisition of primary entertainment assets from 21st Century Fox, which initially allowed it to secure two-thirds of Hulu.
