A person was killed by a falling tree on Thursday when Storm Ciarán smashed into the Dutch town of Venray.

The Netherlands is currently being hit by intense winds caused by the storm, which is sweeping across several other European countries, including Belgium, France, and the United Kingdom. The alert level has been raised to orange, with winds expected to reach up to 110 km/hr.

In Rotterdam, the 'storm protocol' has been initiated and large container terminals are shut. However, operations continue as normal in the smaller terminals.

Dutch airline KLM announced that all its flights departing and arriving at Amsterdam-Schiphol airport would be cancelled from midday onwards. Approximately 200 flights, primarily to nearby European destinations, have been cancelled. Rail and ferry services have also been disrupted.

Initial reports suggest that Storm Ciarán has already caused at least six fatalities across Europe, including two victims in Ghent, another in central Madrid, a lorry driver in France, and a woman in her forties in Germany.
