The French Republic’s Guard will reinstate its long-absent public changing guard ceremony at the Élysée Palace for the first time in 27 years.

The changing of the guard at the Elysée Palace will once again be open to the public, the French Presidency announced on Sunday. This tradition, abandoned 27 years ago, will be open to the public every first Tuesday of the month.

"For the first time since 1996, the First Infantry Regiment of the Republican Guard will perform the grand changing of the guard ceremony at the Élysée Palace, beginning at 09:00 on Tuesday, 7 November 2023," the presidency said in a statement.

"This ceremony will be open to the public and will be repeated on the first Tuesday of every month," it added.

During this changing of the guard, two sections of 16 soldiers will march along the Avenue de Marigny and the Rue de l'Elysée to meet in front of the main gate of the Palais de l'Elysée, on the Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, the presidency explained.

After an exchange of military salutes and instructions between the two section chiefs, the members of the rising guard will enter the courtyard of honour of the palace, at a cadenced pace, before taking up their posts for the next 24 hours.

This ceremony took place in front of the Elysée Palace between 1909 and 1996 in front of the public, but it has not happened since.
