King Philippe of Belgium relit the eternal flame at the base of the Congress Column in Brussels where the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier lies, on the occasion of Armistice Day.
This annual military ceremony on 11 November commemorates the signing of the Armistice that ended the First World War. It honours those lost in the two world wars and soldiers killed in humanitarian and peace missions since 1945.
In addition to the King, the Presidents of the House and Senate, representatives of the Federal Government and the country's various other governments were also present during the ceremony.
After reviewing the detachments, King Philippe laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and reignited the 'eternal flame'. He then signed the guest book, saluted the present veterans and the heads of represented patriotic associations, before he left to applause.
