A collection of six jerseys worn by Lionel Messi during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, estimated to be worth over $10 million (€9.15 million), will be auctioned in December, Sotheby’s announced on Monday.
These are the shirts the World Cup winning captain wore during the first halves of group matches against Saudi Arabia and Mexico, and those sported in matches in the knock-out stage against Australia, Holland, Croatia and France in the final.
If the estimate of over $10 million is accurate, this batch could threaten the record of the most expensive sports item ever sold, according to Sotheby’s.
The current record is held by a shirt worn by basketball legend Michael Jordan in the 1998 NBA final for Chicago Bulls, sold last year for $10.1 million.
An unspecified portion of the sale's proceeds will be donated to the UNICAS project, an initiative by a Barcelona hospital specialising in rare childhood diseases.
