At least 85 graves in the Jewish section of the Marcinelle Cemetery in Charleroi have been vandalised, Mayor Paul Magnette revealed on Thursday.
The choice of location and the targeted graves strongly suggest anti-Semitic intent behind the actions, the mayor said.
The vandalism, which involved the theft of the Star of David symbols fixed on the graves, was discovered on Wednesday by the cemetery’s gravedigger.
Charleroi city officials have since reported the incident to the police, and have made efforts to inform each of the affected families.
“I express my solidarity and support for the families affected by these unspeakable acts,” Magnette said. “Anti-Semitism is a scourge that we must continue to fight with all our might.”
