The flea market at Brussels' Jeu de Balle is marking its 150th anniversary on Saturday. The City of Brussels is celebrating this milestone with several events on Friday 8 and Saturday 9 December.
Although the Jeu de Balle, located in the heart of the Marolles district, was established in 1853, its iconic flea market only came into existence 20 years later. This market is a must-visit for fans of authentic shopping and Brussels folklore, made world-famous by Tintin, who notably procured the Unicorn Boat there.
In honour of its 150th year, visitors from 10:00 on Saturday can enjoy a DJ set on the square, live music and food trucks throughout the weekend.

"The flea market is an integral part of the vibrant soul of this area, attracting Belgians and tourists alike and creating a unique patchwork," said Fabian Maingain, Brussels City's Economic Affairs councillor.
For the market's traders, this anniversary is particularly symbolic. "Most of us grew up here and took over the businesses from our parents or even our grandparents. We are the world's greatest recyclers, giving second life to objects, and we are proud to continue the tradition of this beautiful market that supports numerous families," enthused Nathalie Lefebvre, a trader at the market.
"This celebration is an opportunity to highlight the importance of our old market, which seems more modern than ever in addressing current ecological, economic and social-cohesion needs," added Mohsin Glaoui, another trader.
