'Large firecracker': School explosion at Wallonia school leaves 13 people injured

Thirteen people were hospitalised and two individuals were arrested following an explosion that occurred on Friday afternoon at a school in Wavre, according to the Walloon Brabant Prosecutor’s Office.

An explosive device, which resembled a "large firecracker", detonated in a corridor of the Providence Institute, a location in central Wavre. This information was confirmed by the prosecutor’s office.

Thirteen people received medical care for injuries and shock and were subsequently taken to the hospital.

Some material damage was also reported, although the exact nature of the explosive device remains undetermined.

Two people, one being a minor attending the school and an adult, have been arrested, stated a spokesperson for the prosecutor’s office to Belga.

As of late Friday afternoon, police services were still present at the scene.
