Denmark stands to experience its highest ever annual rainfall in 2023, according to the Danish meteorological institute, DMI.

With 11 days to go before the end of the year, 2023 has set a new record, with more than 907 mm of rain measured up to the morning of 20 December.

This new record is based on data collected since 1874.

This year breaks the previous record, set in 1999 and equalled in 2019, when 905 mm of rainfall was recorded.

The Scandinavian country collects around 760 mm of rain in an average year, but this may increase.

“Human-induced climate change is causing a gradual increase in rainfall in Denmark,” DMI climatologist Rasmus Anker Pedersen told French news agency AFP.

He predicts that by the end of the century, annual rainfall could increase by 7%.

“The change is not uniform throughout the year,” he explained. “We do not foresee a substantial change in summer rainfall amounts, while winter rainfall will increase by 12%.”
