The Australian Open’s organisers have increased the prize money for next month’s Grand Slam season opener by 13%, compared to the previous season.
Participants will share a prize pool of 86.5 million Australian dollars (about €53.4 million) in Melbourne.
The prize money for every round of the Australian Open has been boosted, with major increases in both the qualifying and early rounds of the singles and doubles, tournament Director Craig Tiley said.
He emphasised that it was incredibly important to reward the best competitors well. They fill the stadiums, so they needed to be compensated properly, he stressed.
Players reaching the first round of the Australian Open will each receive 120,000 Australian dollars, nearly €75,000. Meanwhile, the individual male and female winners can expect to take home close to €2,000,000 each.
