Mobile data usage nearly doubled (+95%) on New Year's Eve compared to the previous year, Proximus announced, according to figures compiled between 20:00 on 31 December and 08:00 on 1 January.

The operator registered 558,269 Giga Bytes (GB), markedly higher than last year's 286,253 GB. However, it should be noted, an average evening corresponds to 468,056 GB.

Meanwhile, Orange's network processed 471,301 GB of mobile data, increasing by 44.49%.

Despite slowing in popularity over recent years, texting remains a preferred method of communication for exchanging New Year's wishes, Proximus noted. On New Year's Eve, 5,628,192 texts were sent. This is a decrease of 21% but is still 2.5 times larger than an average night's volume.

Orange registered a total of 4.7 million texts wishing good tidings for the new year. This is down 12.96% compared to last year.

The number of calls remained fairly stable compared to last year. A total of 4,241,550 calls were made on the Proximus network. On the Orange network, there were 4.99 million phone calls, a slight decrease of 1.58%.
