USA: Man arrested for shooting at Colorado Supreme Court

An armed man was arrested after causing significant damage to the Colorado Supreme Court building.

The court had recently deemed Donald Trump unfit to run for President in the state. However, police have not established a connection between that decision and the shooting.

The incident occurred in the town of Denver on Monday night. The unidentified man was involved in a car accident, during which he aimed his gun at another driver. He then shot at a window of the Supreme Court building, threatened an unarmed security guard, went up to the sixth floor, and fired multiple shots, according to police.

The suspect surrendered to the authorities approximately two hours later.

“There is significant and widespread damage in the building. The investigation is ongoing,” the police said, noting that no injuries were reported.

“At the moment, we believe this is not linked to previous threats against the judges of the Colorado Supreme Court,” they added.

On 19 December, the Colorado Supreme Court declared Donald Trump ineligible for the presidency due to his behaviour during the attack on the Capitol in Washington on 6 January 2021. This surprise announcement was followed by a similar decision by the state of Maine on 28 December.

The US Supreme Court—the nation’s highest court—is expected to rule on the matter in the coming months.
