The Brussels-Capital Region launched a new website 'elections.brussels' to educate citizens about the upcoming local elections.
On the 9th of June, eight million Belgians will head to the polls to elect their regional, federal and European representatives, with a subsequent round of voting for their councillors just four months later.
By the 13th of October, 2024, approximately 900,000 Brussels residents will be casting their votes for their local representatives.
International residents are also able to vote in the local elections, which influences neighbourhoods and people’s lives directly but only 17% of international residents eligible to vote actually do so.
This could also partly explain why the new site provides vital information surrounding the importance of voting, the voting process in the Brussels Region, the role of local councillors and mayors, the conduct of an election campaign and practical guidance on proxy voting.
"Elections.brussels is a comprehensive guide to the elections. Providing clear and transparent information on these elections is essential to ensure the exercise of democracy," said Bernard Clerfayt (DéFI), the Brussels Minister for Local Government, in a statement.
The site also features various tools to facilitate access for people with disabilities.
