Former US President Donald Trump has been ordered to pay $392,638 to the New York Times and its journalists after losing a legal case against them.
In September 2021, Trump had lodged a lawsuit against the New York Times, accusing three of its journalists of a “sneaky plot” to access his tax records. They had previously published a prestigious Pulitzer Prize-winning probe in 2018.
In May 2023, a judge in New York State Supreme Court’s commercial division dismissed the suit, and deemed Trump liable for the costs. Following a further judgment on Friday, the judge deemed the New York Times’ estimated legal fees as “reasonable” and ordered Trump to reimburse them in full.
The 2018 investigation had revealed how the erstwhile property developer, who claims to be self-made, amassed his wealth. The report asserted that Trump had received the equivalent of $413 million from his father over several years, partially transferred through a shell company, which allowed them to evade tax.
