A code yellow has been issued for slipperiness on roads on Monday and Tuesday due to the cold weather across Belgium.

In and around Brussels, slush showers are expected, while in other provinces, several centimetres of snow are expected, raising the risk of dangerous roads.

One week after this winter's first ice day, temperatures are showing no signs of warming up. Monday will be alternating to cloudy with wintry showers, with maximum temperatures expected to be 2°C in the centre of Belgium, and as low as -3°C in the High Fens, the Royal Meteorological Institute (RMI) said. Code yellow has been issued for slippery roads in several provinces, including Brussels.

"Between Sunday evening and Monday night (midnight), snow showers will bring 1 to 6 cm of snow in the Ardennes and the provinces of Antwerp, Limburg and Brabant," the RMI noted in its warning. "In the High Fens, this could reach 10 to 15 cm of fresh snow, or locally a little more."

Code yellow will be in place until early on Tuesday morning. A warning for slippery roads had been in place since Saturday evening in the Walloon provinces of Liège, Namur and Luxembourg.

'Be careful'

While most of the snow is expected to fall in the northeastern part of the country on Monday, in central Belgium, showers of slush or even snow are likely. In the Ardennes, more fresh snow is expected, while in the west and southwest, it will often be dry.

Translation: "Due to winter weather conditions, road surfaces may be slippery. Please be careful on the track and bike paths."

Brussels' traffic agency Mobiris and the Agency for Roads and Traffic (AWV) warned of potentially slippery roads and cycle paths and called on people to be careful when on the roads. The gritting services are closely monitoring the condition of roads and cycle paths and where necessary, the gritters will drive out.

AWV is also again calling for local (winter) showers to be reported via the RMI app. "This information helps our winter service to assess even more accurately the risks of slipperiness."

Snow is expected inland and in the Ardennes on Monday evening while temperatures will be below zero in most of the country. Tuesday is expected to be a dry day with nice sunny spells with maximum temperatures between 0 and -4°C south of Sambre and Meuse, around +1°C in the centre and around +3°C in the coastal region. More snow is expected later in the week.
