Dozens of people have been reporting a pungent smell of gas hanging over the City of Antwerp and the southern part of the city on Thursday morning. The cause is still unknown.

The Antwerp Zone Fire Brigade received several dozen calls on Thursday morning for a pungent gas smell, also described as a solid petrol smell or the stench of rotten eggs. The smell has been identified in the city centre and the south of the city.

Translation: "We are currently receiving many reports of a gas smell, spread throughout the city of Antwerp. Most reports are about a penetrating smell on the street. We are informed."

Both the fire brigade itself and natural gas grid operator Fluvius have sent crews to the streets to search for the source of the gas smell, but they have not yet found a leak.

Where the smell is coming from is not yet clear. As the wind is not currently blowing from the port area or the Scheldt, it is not thought to be coming from that direction.

People who are still worried about the smell and want to call the emergency services are advised to try and properly describe where the smell is noticeable.

The reports come just days after a major gas explosion in Brussels injured three people.
