Farmers from West Flanders plan to block access to Zeebrugge Port on Tuesday. “Enough is enough for young farmers,” they said in a statement on Monday.
They are protesting against what they see as the increasing number of regulations that do not consider the needs of farmers, affecting their earnings not only in Flanders but in Belgium as a whole and in Europe.
They have singled out Zeebrugge Port as the venue for demonstrating their grievances, citing the fact that “industry is allowed to emit 40 times more than we, the farmers.”
The farmers clarified that they are not advocating vandalism or aiming to inconvenience citizens, but merely intend to send a powerful message. Specifically, they will close the access roads to Zeebrugge for freight traffic starting from 1:30 pm. The protest is set to continue until Wednesday evening or overnight.
