The eighth edition of the alcohol-free February "Tournée Minérale" campaign kicked off on Thursday. The Belgian initiative encourages people to refrain from consuming alcoholic beverages until the end of February.

Aside from chocolates and waffles, Belgium is famed for its beer. This is reflected in its consumption of the beverage and other alcoholic drinks. People in Belgium drink alcohol more often than the average European and consume an average of 12 litres of pure alcohol per person every year.

To make people more conscious about how much alcohol they consume, the Tournée Minérale encourages an entire month without alcohol – the shortest month in the year. Around 1.5 million people in Belgium take on the challenge, a number that grows every year.

Alongside trying to abstain from alcohol, the campaign also aims to free people from the social pressure to drink thanks to it being so widely known. It also stimulates people to have conversations about alcohol and its effects.

A period without alcohol has many benefits for people's health, and even those who drink 'in moderation' can experience benefits. The majority of participants indicate that they experience more energy, sleep better, and lose weight, but also that their skin looks healthier. Saving money and avoiding hangovers are also among the benefits.
