Farmers have forcefully obstructed the Zelzate bridge over the Ghent-Terneuzen Canal on Thursday.

Ten tractors occupied the bridge, making it impossible to raise and let boat traffic through.

This has halted all navigation in the Ghent section of the port, stated Johan Bresseleers, spokesperson for North Sea Port.

The location is visited daily by around ten boats to load and unload cargo.

Due to the demonstration, by 08:00, the farmers appeared to stop trucks from crossing the bridge, though passenger traffic was unaffected.

Some farmers also moved toward Ghent’s "turbo" roundabout, one of Flanders’ busiest, disrupting key routes for goods transportation and workers commuting to port factories.
