February 2024 will "with certainty" be the warmest February since observations began in Brussels-Uccle, the Royal Meteorological Institute (IRM) reported on Tuesday.
So far this month the average temperature was 8.5°C – far exceeding the historic average of 4.2°C. Slightly lower minimum temperatures are expected for the last few days of the month, which could bring the average temperature for the entire month down to around 8.3°C, the IRM predicts.
"This will be an all-time record," the institute outlined. "The previous record was set in 1990 (7.9°C)."
February will also break records for the average minimum temperature. "After 26 days, we are currently at 6.4°C, almost 5°C above the normal value (1.5°C)", says the IRM. The record was last broken in 1892, reaching 4.8°C.
