A large mural honouring the cycling legend Eddy Merckx was unveiled on Friday in his birthplace of Meensel-Kiezegem, Flemish Brabant.This initiative was commissioned by Vlaams Brabant Tourism, which aimed to install ten such murals along the province’s cycling routes.
The artwork, designed and executed by the Threepack artist collective, depicts Merckx with a "convincing and penetrating" gaze that seems to scrutinise passing cyclists. The illustration incorporates aspects of his myriad cycling nicknames, including The Cannibal and The Tambourine of the Pedals.

The yellow jersey Merckx wears in the painting refers to his numerous victories in the Tour de France. Accompanied by the large number 525, the mural symbolises the record-breaking number of professional wins he achieved throughout his career, a record that remains unmatched to date.
The celebrated cyclist was present at the unveiling and expressed his gratitude, “It’s a great honour." He added, "My parents’ home is just 50 metres away. It’s wonderful to receive such a tribute after so many years in the sport. This can be a source of inspiration for cycling enthusiasts; in my opinion, it’s the most beautiful sport in the world. I’m very proud."
