Following an accident on Saturday morning, two people in the car involved became trapped inside the vehicle. Passers-by helped support the vehicle until emergency services arrived, which helped ensure they survived.

At around 06:00 on Saturday morning, the Brussels fire brigade and 112 medical services responded to a traffic accident in Evere, at a roundabout on the Avenue des Olympiades. They were notified that the accident involved just one car and that people were trapped inside it.

"The car was on its side and swaying dangerously. The driver was trapped inside the vehicle," the Brussels fire brigade spokesperson Walter Derieuw said. The passenger meanwhile had fallen through the driver's side window.

"He found himself with his lower limbs inside the car and his upper body outside. Passers-by supported the vehicle until we arrived, to prevent it from crushing the passenger." Derieuw said. This means it is partly thanks to chance passers-by who helped out that the man is still alive.

The two sedated victims were extracted and treated immediately by the medical teams on site.

It is currently unclear whether the persons are in life danger. "Internal injuries are feared, so I can't comment on the medical condition of the two injured," Derieuw concluded. The Brussels North police zone is now investigating the circumstances of the accident.
