NATO’s general secretary, Jens Stoltenberg, announced on Wednesday that Ukraine requires long-term, robust and predictable military aid, which should also be better coordinated.

Discussions on how NATO can enhance and organise its support for Ukraine more effectively are expected to occur.

Stoltenberg is reportedly planning to propose the establishment of a €100 billion fund over five years to assist Ukraine in its conflict with Russia, according to diplomatic sources.

"In our meeting today, we discussed how to put our support on a firmer and more enduring basis for the future," said Stoltenberg. "All Allies agree on the need to support Ukraine in this critical moment. There is a unity of purpose."

Stoltenberg added that Allies have agreed to move forward with planning for a greater NATO role in coordinating security assistance and training to Ukraine, with the details that will take shape in the weeks to come.

The current military assistance is coordinated by the United States through the Ukraine Defence Contact Group, often referred to by the name of its frequent meeting spot – the Ramstein American air base in Western Germany.

“No decisions” are anticipated at this meeting, but “discussions will continue in preparation for the NATO summit in Washington in July,” Mr Stoltenberg assured the press.

Insiders report that the move is designed to Trump-proof assistance to Ukraine.
