Some 50 people squatting in the former Spanish embassy in Schaerbeek were forced to leave on Thursday. Approximately 200 police officers were involved in the operation, according to local police, which took place without incident, revealed police authorities from the North district (Schaerbeek, Evere, Saint-Josse-ten-Noode) on Thursday morning.
The eviction of the people squatting at number 42, Avenue Eugène Demolder in Schaerbeek started shortly before 9:00am following a request by the building’s owner. The squat can also be accessed from Rue Léopold Courouble and this particularity resulted in the need for approximately 200 officers for the operation.
Local police authorities say there were no incidents and squatters were given time to collect and take their few possessions.
