Sam Moore, one half of the American soul duo Sam & Dave, has died aged 89, according to the Associated Press.

Sam & Dave were among the early soul artists, achieving a series of hits in the 1960s, including Soul Man, Hold On, I’m Coming, and I Thank You.

Moore died on Friday morning in Coral Gables, Florida, due to complications following a medical procedure. Further details have not been released.

In 1992, Sam Moore and Dave Prater were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Moore influenced musicians such as Michael Jackson, Al Green, and Bruce Springsteen.

Sam & Dave signed with the Memphis-based Stax label through Atlantic Records. Isaac Hayes and David Porter became their regular producers and songwriters.

Soul Man from 1967 was the first in a series of international hits. The duo was often backed on their singles by Booker T. & the M.G.’s, Stax’s house band.

Sam & Dave gained fame for their energetic and spirited performances, establishing themselves as one of the best live acts of the late 1960s.

Dave Prater passed away long ago. He died in his early fifties in a car accident in Georgia in 1988.
