The Francophone liberal party MR has asked the City of Brussels municipality to stop exempting outdoor music events from noise standards after receiving a raft of complaints following Core Festival.
Having taken place at the capital’s Osseghem Park on 27 and 28 May, the noise generated by the festival was “seven times higher than the maximum authorised limit,” according to MR’s parliamentary leader David Weytsman.
He also claimed that Brussels-Environment received hundreds of complaints from families living nearby and students unable to study for their exams.
The issue has led Weytsman to call on the City of Brussels’ municipal council to “immediately” stop granting exemptions for such events, even if they are not frequent, as he claims they “send a damaging message both for the industry and the quality of life in the neighbourhoods."
Moreover, the Brussels MP wants there to be a so-called quality of life contract model to be introduced in the capital, as is the case in several European cities. These contracts are drawn up following public consultation and aim to define an overtaking of the sound limit during such events.
