Luc De Schepper, rector of Hasselt University until 2020, has died at the age of 65, Het Belang van Limburg reported on its website on Monday evening.
De Schepper studied physics at the University of Antwerp (1979) and received his doctorate from Limburg University Center (LUC) in 1983.
From 1997 to 2003, he headed the Department of Mathematics, Physics and Computer Science and from 1999 to 2004 he was director of the LUC's Institute for Materials Research (IMO). He was also briefly (2003 - 2004) dean of the Faculty of Science.
In October 2004, he succeeded Harry Martens as rector of the LUC, renamed Hasselt University in 2005. Under his rectorship, three new faculties were established at UHasselt.
From 2015 to 2017, De Schepper was chair of the Flemish Interuniversity Council.
In October 2020, he was succeeded as rector by Bernard Vanheusden.
“As rector, he has rendered tremendous services to UHasselt. We are today, more than ever, a center of education, research and service, more than ever a university with impact. He has strongly left his mark here,” said current rector Vanheusden.
