The Verviers Criminal Court is reviewing a case of online harassment that spanned from August 2019 to November 2023.

The victim's ordeal began when they started selling clothes on Facebook. The defendant initially contacted them about the sale, but it quickly escalated to sexual advances. The defendant's offences ranged from sending flowers to the victim's workplace, stalking them and posting pictures of them on their Facebook profile, including an image of their building.

The victim's life has since been significantly impacted: they can no longer live alone and have been forced to move. Changing bank details and other measures have been taken to avoid contact with the harasser, but these have taken a toll on the victim's mental and physical health.

Legal counsel pointed out that the defendant had transferred one cent to the victim's bank account with a note saying, "I miss you, please contact me." The lawyer added that his client is overwhelmed and the harasser's Facebook account still showcases photos of the victim. An expert's opinion has been requested to assist in the matter.

Prosecutors are calling for a one-year prison sentence. The defendant admitted in court to being somewhat isolated and clinging to a one-way romance, unaware of the harm they were causing. They offered an apology to the victim.

Despite the serious nature of the acts, the defence argues for a probation suspension, citing a psychiatric evaluation of the defendant.

A verdict is expected on 11 June.
