The Flemish Government has recognised the floods of January 2024 and the heavy rainfall of May 2024 in Flanders as official disasters.

Those who suffered damage can apply for compensation from the Flemish Disaster Fund. This was reported by Flemish Minister-President Matthias Diependaele (N-VA).

At the start of 2024, between 2 to 5 Janury, numerous municipalities in Flanders were severely affected by floods. Like the heavy rainfall on 17 and 18 May in the Voerstreek, the Flemish Government recognises those floods as a disaster.

"The aerial images are burned into everyone's retinas," said Diependaele. "Flanders shows solidarity and will compensate people or companies who have suffered damage through the Flemish Disaster Fund."

For the January floods, Flanders recognises following municipalities: Aalter, Affligem, Alveringem, Deerlijk, Deinze, Evergem, Gavere, Geraardsbergen, Haaltert, Herzele, Heuvelland, Ypres, Liedekerke, Lierde, Lochristi, Londerzeel, Lo-Reninge, Merelbeke, Nazareth, Poperinge, Ternat, Vleteren, Waasmunster, Zele, Zulte and Zwevegem.

For the heavy rainfall of 17 and 18 May, heavily affected Voeren is acknowledged.

Individuals or companies who have suffered damage from either disaster can apply for compensation.
