Belgian Secretary of State Thomas Dermine had a National Day to remember when the father of one of Belgium's most famous footballers informed him that his trousers were covered in dirt.

Thursday's royal parade during Belgium' National Day celebrations was attended by royals, common citizens and Belgian politicians alike.

Thomas Dermine, Belgium's State Secretary for Economic Recovery and Science Policy, found himself sat in front of Thomas Witsel, father to the Red Devils' midfield anchor Axel Witsel.

Witsel, who was already friends with Dermine on Facebook, did not hesitate to point something out to him on Messenger: the state of his trousers.

"Hi Thomas, just to let you know that your trousers are ruined," Thomas Witsel told his political namesake.

Dermine responded a few minutes later, saying that he had dirtied them while playing football with his daughter in the park, and that he had a friend on his way to bring him a change of clothes.

"Thanks for the cover," he said to Witsel, who replied, "It clearly shows... be careful."

Thomas Dermine posted a screenshot of their exchange on Twitter with the caption: "Live my life in the parade stand on 21 July."
