The Parliamentary Committee on Energy will hold an extra session on the energy crisis on 13 September, announced chair Christian Leysen on Wednesday.
An exchange of views with Federal Energy Minister Tinne Van der Straeten, who will have an emergency meeting with her fellow EU ministers about the sky-high energy prices on 9 September, is planned, according to Leysen.
The extra session was requested by Peter Mertens, an MP for the far-left PVDA party. In particular, he wants to hear about plans for taxation on the excess profits of energy producers, which PVDA has been asking for almost a year now.
Mertens also urgently requested a general package of emergency measures to temper the energy bills of households.
The Consultative Committee, which brings together Belgium's top ministers from all governments, is currently meeting to discuss the energy crisis and what steps can be taken at the national level to protect consumers as well as businesses.
A press conference to announce the decisions will take place at 18:00, confirmed a spokesperson for Prime Minister Alexander De Croo.
